The dementias - A review and a call for a disaggregated approach

•This paper proposes a 'disaggregated approach' to the science of dementia and its biomedical orientations.•The approach allows us to simultaneously rely on some biomedical texts while criticising others.•I highlight the limits of a dementia diagnosis and further show why statistics on dementia prevalence need to be considered with care.
