Guidelines for professional practice in reporting information about measurement instruments in health research

•We identify problematic practices in reporting new measurement instruments and adaptations of pre-existing instruments.•We propose guidelines to improve replicability in health research and facilitate management of measurement information.•We recommend the use of these guidelines by authors, journal reviewers, and editors during the peer-review process.
