Abstract

•Pyrolysis of ethyl 2-amino-5-arylazo-6-phenylnicotinates gave 2-amino, 2,5-diamino and 5-arylazopyridine derivatives.•Pyrolysis of 5-arylazonicotinonitriles gave 5-aminonicotinonitriles and pyrido[3,4-c]cinnoline-1-carbonitriles.•The obtained pyridine derivatives are of potential utility in pharmaceutical and dye industry.

FVP and static pyrolysis of ethyl 2-amino-5-arylazo-6-phenylnicotinates 7a-d and 5-arylazonicotinonitriles 8a-c enabled the synthesis of the hitherto unreported pyridine derivatives of potential utility in pharmaceutical and dye industry including 5-arylazopyridine-2-amines, 6-arylpyridine-2,5-diamines, 5-aminonicotinonitriles and pyrido[3,4-c]cinnolines.
