Abstract
Metal-based drug efficacy can be improved by optimizing the coordination chemistry. Vanadium-based drugs illustrate the principles of speciation and these concepts are applied to platinum drugs. Speciation of cisplatin illustrates that more selective speciation reduces side effects and leads to cheaper health care. Future drug development should include speciation considerations.
