Abstract
⺠The persistence of a molecular imprint of past land use is discussed. ⺠A soil converted from grassland to forest is compared to two reference soils. ⺠Mixing of former and current biomarker patterns affects ubiquitous lipid reliability. ⺠Highly specific biomarkers are effective recorders of land use change.
