Abstract
► Four methods for quantifying black carbon (BC) in soils were compared. ► Thermal methods focussed on highly condensed soot. ► Short term thermal treatment led to a severe positive bias. ► Molecular markers covered a wide range of BC, underestimating vapour phase condensates. ► Mid-infrared spectroscopy differentiated slightly condensed from highly condensed carbon forms.
