Abstract
⺠Four methods for quantifying black carbon (BC) in soils were compared. ⺠Thermal methods focussed on highly condensed soot. ⺠Short term thermal treatment led to a severe positive bias. ⺠Molecular markers covered a wide range of BC, underestimating vapour phase condensates. ⺠Mid-infrared spectroscopy differentiated slightly condensed from highly condensed carbon forms.
