► An olive lipoxygenase gene (Oep2LOX1) was isolated and functionally characterized as a 9-LOX. ► Oep2LOX1 expression is spatially and temporally regulated in olive fruit. ► Temperature, light and wounding regulate Oep2LOX1 gene at transcriptional level.
