Abstract
Carotene derivatives serve as communication signals in partner recognition and sexual development in zygomycete fungi. The same signal substances function over a wide range of species. Species specificity of the mating reaction at early stages is maintained mainly by time and developmental stage-dependent regulation of trisporoid synthesis and responses.
