Abstract
Ureases belong to a group of multifunctional proteins displaying ureolytic activity, toxic properties in mammalians, ability to activate blood platelets and insecticidal activity; the latter reinforces the possibility of plant ureases having a protective role against phytopathogens through an entirely different mechanism, unrelated to the release of ammonia.
