Abstract

•Three new (1-3) and three known phenylpropanoids (4-6) were isolated from N. tabacum.•Compounds 1-6 were evaluated for their anti-TMV activities.•Compound 1 and 6 exhibited high anti-TMV activities with inhibition rates of 34.6 and 35.4%.

Three new phenylpropanoids, 3-(6-methoxy-3-oxo-1, 3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-yl)-3-oxopropyl acetate (1), 3-hydroxy-1-(6-methoxy-1, 3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-yl)propan-1-one (2), and 3-hydroxy-1-(6- methyl-1, 3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-yl)propan-1-one (3), together with three known phenylpropanoids (4-6) were isolated from the stems of Nicotiana tabacum. Their structures were examined using different spectroscopic techniques, including extensive 1D- and 2D NMR. Compounds 1-6 were also evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activities. The anti-TMV results demonstrated that compounds 1 and 6 exhibited high anti-TMV activities, with inhibition rates of 34.6 and 35.4%, both of which were higher than the positive control (32.5%). The other compounds (2-5) also had anti-TMV activities, with inhibition rates between 16.8 and 28.6%.
