Abstract
Poly(butylene succinate) copolymers with rigid units were synthesized. The strategy is comparable to that employed in poly(butylene adipate terephthalate) synthesis, but alternatives to terephthalic units are proposed, focusing on two bio-based monomers. Isosorbide is non-toxic, to conform to future biodegradability standards. Furanic acid is a very promising emerging monomer. The modified copolyesters showed very good processability by film blowing and the mechanical properties were greatly enhanced. Biodegradability was preserved.221
