Abstract
This paper reports the synthesis of four different trifluoromethyl-substituted poly(arylene ether)s on the basis of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane (bisphenol AF) and various difluoro- or dinitrobiphenyl or terphenyl monomers in the course of a step-growth polycondensation. Besides a comparison between the polymerisability of the different monomer combinations, a main focus of this work lies on the NMR characterization of these poly(arylene ether)s. Poly(arylene ether)s with sufficiently high number average molecular weights were sulfonated by fuming sulfuric acid or chlorosulfonic acid and investigated in terms of membrane properties relevant for fuel cell applications.
