Abstract
The ATRP copolymerization of 5,6-benzo-2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (BMDO) with n-butyl acrylate (nBA) was studied by using ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (EBriBu) and N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/Cu(I)Br as the initiator and catalyst, respectively. The reactivity ratios of the monomers in the copolymerization were determined using the Kelen-Tüdõs method and were found to be rBMDO=0.08 and rnBA=3.7. The copolymer yield decreased with higher amounts of BMDO in the initial feed. The structure of these copolymers was thoroughly characterized by 1D and 2D NMR techniques and quantitative ring opening of BMDO in its copolymerization was demonstrated. The hydrolytic degradation behavior of the BMDO/nBA copolymers was also studied.
