► Infrared laser ablation of silicon is studied through modeling and experiments. ► Silicon vaporization yields plume with non-uniform radiation intensity. ► Radiation intensity distribution is consistent with and explained by the model. ► Silicon liquid ejection is due to surface pressure variation and distribution.
