Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticles grafted with poly(poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate) (P(PEGMA)) were prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. In this approach, S-benzyl Sâ²-trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonate, used as a chain transfer agent for RAFT, was first immobilized onto the magnetic nanoparticle surface, and then PEGMA was grafted onto the surface of magnetic nanoparticle via RAFT polymerization. The results showed that P(PEGMA) chains grew from magnetic nanoparticles by surface-induced RAFT polymerization. The grafted P(PEGMA) chains can decrease the nonspecific adsorption of proteins on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles.
