Abstract
⺠Ar+ bombardment of the CeO2 surface causes the appearance of the reduced oxidation state Ce3+. ⺠The reduction of CeO2 is attributed to a preferential sputtering of oxygen from the surface. ⺠The thickness of the oxygen depletion layer induced by Ar+ bombardment can be quantitatively determined.
