Abstract
⺠Protonation of caffeine was examined by ion mobility spectrometry equipped with two ionization sources. ⺠Experimental and theoretical evidence was collected to assign the observed peaks to caffeine related ionic species. ⺠A new concept of “internal proton affinity”, the protonation tendency for each atom in a molecule, was defined.
