Abstract
► Intense and broad radiation of light was observed when powder materials were shock compressed. ► The radiation of light was observed even for very weak shocks. ► Thermal radiation of shock-compressed powder material is unlikely the source of the radiation. ► Adiabatically-compressed residual gas in powder appears responsible for the radiation of light.
