Abstract
⺠Liquid-like water layers form on FeOOH particle surfaces from the gas phase. ⺠Thermodynamic reversibility was confirmed. ⺠Water layers represent structurally analogous precursors to interfacial liquid water. ⺠Hydrogen bonding patterns are strongly controlled by surface structure. ⺠Water favors hydroxyl groups of lowest Fe coordination.
