► Pd(II)-based organometallic thiols deposited as thick films on Au/Si(1 1 1) surfaces. ► SAMs obtained by multilayers through thermally induced desorption. ► Temperature-dependent SR-XPS measurements on the heated multilayers during annealing. ► Thermal and chemical stability of organometallic thiols films investigated. ► Comparison with SAMs obtained by rinsing the same multilayers with solvents.
