Abstract
⺠Carbon in methane can extend its bonding from tetravalent to five, six or seven. ⺠Calculations indicate that higher coordinated carbonium ions could be viable species. ⺠Structure and bonding of such carbonium ions were compared with the isoelectronic boron analogs.
