Abstract
⺠Ultrafast structural dynamics of gold is studied by femtosecond electron diffraction. ⺠Fluence dependent lattice heating is in agreement with theoretical predictions. ⺠Lattice-expansion dynamics lags behind the increase of the lattice temperature. ⺠Temporal stress-strain relationships are considered. ⺠Morphological properties of the sample are crucial for the structural dynamics.
