Abstract
► Ultrafast structural dynamics of gold is studied by femtosecond electron diffraction. ► Fluence dependent lattice heating is in agreement with theoretical predictions. ► Lattice-expansion dynamics lags behind the increase of the lattice temperature. ► Temporal stress-strain relationships are considered. ► Morphological properties of the sample are crucial for the structural dynamics.
