Abstract
The decrease in water accessible surface area - the blue region - upon plate association is the driving force of the process in both water and aqueous salt solution, because it leads to a gain in translational entropy for water molecules and ions. Low-charge density ions cause a weakening of hydrophobic interaction due to preferential binding on plate surfaces.
