Abstract
The contact configuration of two hard spheres is favoured in water because the solvent-excluded volume decreases upon association, leading to a substantial gain of translational entropy of solvent molecules. This entropy gain increases on increasing the number density of aqueous solution, as caused by salt addition to water.
