Abstract
We give a physical interpretation of the resistance distance and Kirchhoff index of molecules. It is carried out from first principles by defining a local vertex invariant that describes the atomic displacements due to small vibrations/oscillations of atoms from their equilibrium positions. It correlates very well with the thermal factors of atoms in molecules.
