Abstract
Upon UV irradiation, a spirooxazine converts into a photomerocyanine which can interact with zwitterionic amino acids. The strength of this interaction, which is governed by a steric factor, results in a negative catalysis of the thermal back conversion of the merocyanine to spirooxazine.
