Abstract
Alkali metal ions prevent DNA compaction by multivalent cations. Among monocations, Na+ demonstrates stronger inhibition effect than other alkali metal ions. Different inhibition activity of monocations is explained by changes in net translational entropy of small ions due to ionic exchange between trivalent and monovalent cations.
