Abstract
A multiply charged cluster of fullerenes (C60)nz+ is stable if its size is larger than the appearance size. Using a simple model, we calculate the energy barrier for fragmentation and estimate the appearance sizes for 2 ⩽ z ⩽ 7. Our calculation well reproduces the experimental measurements. Geometric shell effects are found.
