Abstract
When the external potential applied on a molecule changes, its chemical hardness is modified. The dual descriptor characterizes locally the variation of the chemical hardness. According to the sign of the dual descriptor the electro/nucleo philicity of a molecular site can be defined. Thus, the selectivity principle in chemistry could be a manifestation of the Principle of Maximum Hardness.
