Abstract
Spectroscopic data on the 3d1 transition metal activators Ti3+, V4+ and Cr5+ in compounds were collected and analysed in order to obtain an overview on the size of the 3d1 level crystal field splitting. Results are compared with data on the 5d1 activators Ce3+ and Eu2+. Trends earlier observed for the 5d1 lanthanides also apply to the 3d1 transition metals. They will be interpreted with the point charge electrostatic model and a modified version thereof.
