Abstract
► Splitting of all Ni2+ energy levels in MgO was calculated using Oh symmetry. ► The calculated Ni2+ energy levels agree well with experimental absorption spectra. ► Spin-orbit interaction is mandatory to be taken into account for MgO:Ni2+.
