Abstract
												⺠Splitting of all Ni2+ energy levels in MgO was calculated using Oh symmetry. ⺠The calculated Ni2+ energy levels agree well with experimental absorption spectra. ⺠Spin-orbit interaction is mandatory to be taken into account for MgO:Ni2+.
