► Relationship between F and energy state 4T1(4G) of Mn2+ in halides was set up. ► Relationship between F and energy difference ΔE of Mn2+ in halides was set up. ► Site occupation of Mn2+-doped halides with two or more cations can be made clear. ► Energy state 4T1(4G) and emission band of Mn2+ in halides can be predicted.
