Abstract
⺠Photoisomerisation of 1-alkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazoles, trans-to-cis, is described in this work. ⺠The process is sensitive to the environment of the photochrome and the solution. ⺠The rate of photoisomerization decreases as catechol>benzoic acid>phenol>salicylic acid. ⺠The reverse isomerization, cis-to-trans is very slow with light and has been carried out with heat. ⺠The activation energy is less than these values when carried out in fresh solution only.
