Abstract
Molar excess volume (VE) of sec-butyl chloride or tert-butyl chloride (A) + benzene or toluene or o- or m- or p-xylene (B) was measured using V-shaped dilatometer over the entire composition range at 308.15 K. The VE values for all the binary (A + B) systems were found to be negative. While the VE values for an equimolar mixture of sec-butyl chloride + aromatics vary in the order: benzene > m-xylene > toluene > p-xylene > o-xylene, for an equimolar mixture of tert-butyl chloride + aromatics, it follows the sequence: benzene > m-xylene > p-xylene > toluene > o-xylene. The data were interpreted qualitatively in terms of electron acceptor-donor type of interactions.
