Abstract
⺠The (â17 Ã â17)R14° phase of sulfur on Ag(100) is a reconstruction in which 5 Ag atoms are removed from the (100) surface plane. ⺠The same model applies to the (â17 Ã â17)R14° phase of sulfur on Cu(100), according to density functional theory. ⺠On Ag(100), the (â17 Ã â17)R14° phase coexists with the p(2 Ã 2) at a coverage slightly above 0.25. ⺠Chain-like structures are also observed in STM, although density functional theory does not predict chains as equilibrium phases.
