Abstract
► We studied the effects of solution temperature on 1-octanethiol SAM on gold surfaces. ► A new superstructure (3×√7)R11° was found on the gold surfaces at 363 K. ► The STM images permitted assignment of four inequivalent OT molecules. ► SAM formation at higher temperatures resulted in the formation of larger pits. ► The fraction of the pit area increased with increasing solution temperature.
