Abstract
Surface science in catalysis has diversified from a discipline based on ultra high vacuum studies of single crystals and films to more realistic model systems of supported catalysts, incorporating planar model supports and a variety of preparation routes. This paper illustrates these developments by reviewing synthesis methods, opportunities for characterization, and by discussion specific examples from polymerization catalysis.
