Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to investigate the (0Â 0Â 1) surface structure of Nb doped SrTiO3 single crystals annealed in ultra high vacuum (UHV). Atomically resolved images of the (2Â ÃÂ 2) reconstructed surface are obtained after annealing a chemically etched sample. With further annealing dotted row domains appear, which coexist with the (2Â ÃÂ 2) reconstruction. The expansion of these domains with further annealing gives rise to the formation of a TiO2 enriched c(4Â ÃÂ 4) reconstruction.
