Abstract
Semiclassical electron broadening and shift models have significantly differing behaviors for În=0 and Înâ 0 transitions. În=0 transitions generally are not susceptible to large, diagnostically observable shifts due to significant mixing and quenching between upper and lower states. Large shifts typically occur for Înâ 0 transitions where the lower states are much more tightly bound than the upper states therefore resulting in negligible mixing and quenching effects.
