Abstract

Semiclassical electron broadening and shift models have significantly differing behaviors for Δn=0 and Δn≠0 transitions. Δn=0 transitions generally are not susceptible to large, diagnostically observable shifts due to significant mixing and quenching between upper and lower states. Large shifts typically occur for Δn≠0 transitions where the lower states are much more tightly bound than the upper states therefore resulting in negligible mixing and quenching effects.
