Abstract
We report the crystal growth and scintillation properties of two new ternary metal halide scintillators, RbSr2Br5 and RbSr2I5, activated with divalent europium. Transparent 7Â mm diameter single crystals with 2.5% Eu2+ were grown in evacuated quartz ampoules via the Bridgman technique. RbSr2Br5 and RbSr2I5 have monoclinic crystal structures with densities of 4.18Â g/cm3 and 4.55Â g/cm3 respectively. These materials are hygroscopic and have some intrinsic radioactivity due to the presence of 87Rb. Luminescence properties typical of the 5d-4f radiative transition in Eu2+ were observed. The X-ray excited emissions consisted of singular peaks centered at 429Â nm for RbSr2Br5:Eu 2.5% and 445Â nm for RbSr2I4:Eu 2.5%. RbSr2Br5:Eu 2.5% had a light yield of 64,700 photons/MeV, with an energy resolution of 4.0%, and RbSr2I5:Eu 2.5% had a light yield of 90,400Â ph/MeV with an energy resolution of 3.0% at 662Â keV. Both crystals have an excellent proportional response over a wide range of gamma-ray energies.
