Abstract
Georgia is the third country (after Ukraine and Russia), where, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the National Energy Regulatory Commission was established (August 1997). The paper dwells on the origin, development and the results achieved over the past 20 years. The final part of the paper deals with future challenges. They include: promoting completion in the regulating sectors, creating favourable information environment, a steady growth in economic efficiency, stage-by-stage liberalization of regulation, full protection of the consumers' rights.
