Abstract
Utilizing the reaction between dissolved Si atoms and Al4C3, SiC particles have been in situ synthesized in Al-Si alloys, which perform multiple-scale ranging from nano- to micro-sized, exhibiting polyhedron morphology. An in situ 2% SiCp reinforced Al-17.5Si-4.5Cu-2Ni-0.65 Mg piston alloy was designed. The hardness, density, wear resistance and thermal expansion coefficient properties are improved, and the ultimate tensile strength can be increased up to 132 MPa tested at 350 °C. Besides, it is regarded that the in situ SiC particulates act on the process of heat treatment, which affect the mechanical properties as a result. The in situ SiCp/Al-Si composites may be promising candidates for high temperature applications.
