Abstract
Hatsujiro Hashimoto, widely known as “Hashi”, died on 15 April at the age of 95. Even by the exalted standards set by so many of his compatriots, the achievements of his 60-year active career in electron microscopy were extraordinary. Not only was he a pioneer in several crucial developments and applications but he played a leading role in encouraging electron microscopy at international level. In addition to his scientific reputation, he brought to this challenge his unique blend of pertinacity, diplomacy and artistic skill.
