Abstract
In this paper, investigations on different fluid supply methods in grinding are presented. Different nozzle designs as well as different grinding wheel types were investigated. Besides a standard superabrasive grinding wheel with continuous layer, a slotted grinding wheel was investigated. This wheel provides small pockets positioned around its perimeter. Through these pockets, the amount of fluid transported into the contact zone was increased. The different setups enabled to identify the influences of contact zone flow rate and bulk cooling on the cooling efficiency in grinding. The cooling efficiency was evaluated by means of the resulting alteration of surface integrity. The results show that a sufficiently high contact zone flow rate prevails over a high bulk cooling of the workpiece.
