Abstract
The authors report the effect of cobalt addition on the glass-forming ability (GFA) in Fe-Co-Cr-Mo-C-B-Y bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) by using Mössbauer experiments. Among the studied Fe-based alloy system, the alloy with 7% Co (Co7 alloy) displays the largest electronic quadrupole splitting. The origin of the superhigh GFA for the Co7 alloy was discussed in terms of its spatially homogeneous distribution of elements that reduces the element segregation and retards the crystallization.
