Abstract
The removal process of hard bone tissue, an anisotropic viscoelastic composite material, during orthopedic surgery, is complicated and challenged. Piezosurgery has been applied increasingly in orthopedic surgery because of its selective cutting attribute and much more precision compared to conventional tools. However, whether it can solve the problems of cutting hard bone tissue remains unknown. This paper reviews the mechanism of piezosurgery, analyses the advantages and disadvantages of piezosurgery and conventional tools during hard bone tissue cutting from different aspects, such as cutting force, cutting temperature, tissue damage, cutting efficiency, etc. Some directions for further research are also highlighted.
