•Process development from laboratory results to industrial implementation is discussed.•Modern process development methodology includes pre-development and development phases.•The main steps for developing industrial catalysts are summarized.•Chemical and hydrodynamic reactor engineering uses multi-scale modeling.•Process schemes, simulation, heat integration and process optimization lead to process guidelines.
Process development is a complex process that starts with an analysis of the technical and economic feasibilities of innovative proposals emerging from research work and ends with the oil-in of the first industrial unit. Modern process development strategy draws on complementary skills in the fields of reaction engineering, catalyst development, technology development and process scheme integration and optimization.
