Abstract
In this work, a comprehensive analytical study is presented on two-layer one- dimensional photonic crystal in which the first layer is considered to be an analyte layer and the second layer is assumed be left-handed material (LHM), dielectric or metal. The dispersion relation is derived for p- polarized wave (TM). The sensitivity of the effective index to any change in the analyte index is derived, plotted and analyzed. Our optimization shows that it is possible for photonic crystal sensor to achieve a sensitivity improvement of 714% compared to conventional waveguide sensor.
