Abstract
I recently attended a series of strategic planning sessions held by our health management department at the university where I work. A professional consultant facilitated the meetings, which began with a review of the university's mission, vision, and value statements (MVVs), along with a summary of its recently revised strategic plan. The purpose of the meetings was to review and update our department's MVVs to make sure that they were still in keeping with those of the university's. The discussions that followed were thoughtful, reflective, and energizing. We quickly came to realize the value of taking a break from our everyday routines, and focusing as a group on how things were going in terms of helping our university fulfill its mission, achieve its vision, and live up to its core campus values. The sessions gave us all a welcomed sense of being connected to the university's broader purpose of education, research, and public service.
