Abstract
Deep venous thrombosis is a sterile inflammatory process. The early neutrophil-mediated events that drive thrombosis are beginning to be better clarified. This study using mouse models of venous thrombosis shows the importance of neutrophils in clearance of sterile inflammatory mediators, in particular neutrophil extracellular traps and uric acid, and in modulation of apoptosis. These experimental findings may inform therapies that may be able to prevent deep venous thrombosis formation or accelerate its resolution without the risks of bleeding.
